Fines and Election rule change proposals
How do you feel about the proposed rule changes?
I see some pros and cons to the election proposal:
I see some pros and cons to the election proposal:
- Pro : Sweepstakes would have an easier time getting rolls started in late September when the weather is still great
- Pro : Sweepstakes might do more proactive things over the summer in anticipation of their year in charge
- Con : The committee would be elected by a different group of chairman than the group that would have to work with them for a year
- Con : The time right after raceday is a tough one for buggy people. Nominations might be even harder to come by if no one has thought about next year yet.

Re: Fines and Election rule change proposals
I think the election rule is worth a shot. It's tough getting folks to do anything right after raceday but I figure it's worth a try. I would amend the rule to make sure that a meeting happens before September 15th even if there is a Committee elected though, just in case the folks you elected in the spring are flaking out it would suck to not really realize that until like October.

I think that as a last resort, the rule should be that the winning organization has to run the first weeks of rolls if there is no Sweepstakes elected in time. This would incentivize the winning org chairman to make sure things got rolling in a timely manner. That's what I would have done had I not been able to convince an outstanding candidate to run.

Abby, having the winning org act as sweepstakes chair is probably reasonable for a week or two, but having a temporary safety chair probably wouldn't go over well with many people...

The thought of the winning org being able to safety buggies might encourage folks to elect a new committee though.

Carl, Yeah that would be like "the winners get to play gynecologist with everyone's wife until someone else steps up"
I'm guessing a few will step up.

Re: Fines and Election rule change proposals
I agree it is a nice threat, but I think it is a bad policy if it were to actually happen.
It might be easier to just specify that the first meeting is on the 2nd Monday after the start of classes at 10pm and the room can be reserved by one of:
the outgoing sweepstakes chair if they can claim the room that far in advance;
the sweepstakes advisor within the administration;
the winning organization of the previous year.
And the meeting is run by the winning organization...

The third revision about election dates passed.
Draft 2 [sic], Proposed Election Rules Change (addition underlined):

The purpose of this meeting is to elect a Sweepstakes Chairman, an Assistant Sweepstakes Chairman, and a Safety Chairman for that school year. This meeting shall be held within two weeks of the official start of undergraduate classes. The organization that sponsored the winning entry in the previous school yearʼs Sweepstakes races shall be responsible for scheduling, publicizing, organizing, and supervising this meeting.
