In light of the events of 2007, I would guess:
A. To learn how to not be disqualified at the finish line
B. To learn how to exchange a buggy
C. To see the faces of pushers as they grunt and groan

while those are all lovely ideas, i think the main reason is so that alumni can yell at mechanics about how they need to learn to catch a buggy!
