Drew, haven't you been to FMB's fire safety training before? I could have sworn I've seen you at one of the meetings. I have been to three of them, and at each one FMB introduced himself as the university's fire safety specialist. He also explained the inspiration for the fire safety rule by telling us the ATO truck fire story.
Anyway, I don't think there could have been any other call made on this. If anyone wanted to bring out something that could have possibly been questionable, they should have thought to clear it with the fire marshal, or at the very least, Sweepstakes. Sometimes, when you've been around for a while (especially when you're at the top), it's possible that you'll make the mistake of forgetting some rule or another. Hell, there are so many rules that I'm sure everyone could forget a couple of them here or there. This just happens to be a rule with a very severe consequence. I've said it before, and Andrew backed it up again here, that the university officials cannot stand to let a huge safety violation as determined by a safety official go unpunished. If buggy can't be conducted in an appropriately safe way, then the university can't let it be conducted at all.
Right now, the people who were directly affected by the rule are taking it much better than their alumni. Which I think is pretty funny, as they were the ones with the most to lose.
