{"id":373,"date":"2009-04-05T15:12:12","date_gmt":"2009-04-05T20:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cmubuggy.org\/News\/?p=373"},"modified":"2023-09-04T07:24:40","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T12:24:40","slug":"rolls-report-44-and-45","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cmubuggy.org\/news\/2009\/04\/rolls-report-44-and-45\/","title":{"rendered":"Rolls Report 4\/4 and 4\/5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last regular weekend before truck weekend was a pretty good one, nice and long with 2:20 of daylight and temperatures starting in the low 30&#8217;s but the sun warmed things up quickly.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Saturday<\/span><br \/>\nIn Attendance (11 Orgs, 26 Buggies)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beta: Problem Child<\/li>\n<li>Spirit:Fuko, Haraka, Seraph<\/li>\n<li>Fringe: Banyan, Brazen, Bedlam<\/li>\n<li>PiKA: Chimera, Knightfall, Zeus, RD09<\/li>\n<li>SDC: Psychosis, Envy, Malice<\/li>\n<li>KDR: Perun, Powder, Polaris<\/li>\n<li>AEPi: Kamikaze, Camo<\/li>\n<li>SigNu: Skua<\/li>\n<li>SAE: Rubicon<\/li>\n<li>CIA: Firebird, Mirage, Conquest<\/li>\n<li>SigEp: Pandora, Barracuda<\/li>\n<li>PhiKap: Svengali, Schadenfreude<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Observations<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\">Lots of pass tests &#8211; I think everyone, including beta and SAE, \u00a0did pass tests.\u00a0 Also lots of hill 1s.\u00a0 It must be getting close to raceday.<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\">SAE went with CIA for a pass test &#8211; SAE passed CIA before the transition flagger, then got confused and starting turning right after the monument &#8211; cutting right in front of the CIA driver. \u00a0The SAE driver then realized what was going on, straightens out, and then takes the chute on the inside&#8230;.the CIA driver, in the meantime takes a normal line, and narrowly avoids a collision in the chute<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\">Beta&#8217;s Problem Child came to a halt in the middle of the chute with a very loud grinding noise. \u00a0Word from observers was that the two front wheels were no longer pointing in the same direction.<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\">KDR&#8217;s Powder hit the seam right after the chute and had to be taken off the road by hand before the plug.<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\">Kamikaze stopped just past the chute flag, but it was a controlled stop.<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\"><a style=\"float: right; padding: 3px;\" href=\"https:\/\/cmubuggy.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-n9rbVbh\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"giThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-n9rbVbh\/0\/9274237d\/Th\/DSC_0045-Th.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>SigNu painted Bungarus Krait, and started to paint Skua.\u00a0 Skua&#8217;s front hatch was covered in newspaper<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\"><a style=\"float: right; padding: 3px;\" href=\"https:\/\/cmubuggy.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-DWKx4vm\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"giThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-DWKx4vm\/0\/b6c5b48b\/Th\/DSC_0105-Th.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>SigEp&#8217;s new Barracuda had a new windshield cut.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not clear if it&#8217;s an entirely new hatch, but the windshield hole is much larger in the front, and cuts quickly towards the back.<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\">CIA&#8217;s <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Mirage<\/span> Firebird: pushers were trying to tighten the handlebar while pushing Hill 2, it dropped nuts, washer, screw and eventually the entire handle on hill 5.<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\">CIA pass test (first of CIA&#8217;s roll): Firebird passed Mirage in the Chute past the gazebo, got very close to each other (no bump, was counted b\/c pass was before end of haybales)<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\">Spirit and Beta rolled together on almost each roll, then Beta would loop around for their turn.<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\">SigEp&#8217;s last roll: Barracuda slowed to halt at start of Flats. \u00a0Was rolled on sidewalk anti-buggywards back to staging area. \u00a0(Right side was slow, either bad bearing or something tightened too much.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Sunday<\/span><br \/>\nIn Attendance (11 Orgs, 28 Buggies)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beta: Problem Child<\/li>\n<li>Spirit: Fuko, Haraka, Seraph<\/li>\n<li>Fringe: Bristol, Banyan, Bedlam, Blizzard<\/li>\n<li>PiKA: Chimera, Knightfall, Zeus<\/li>\n<li>SDC: Psychosis, Envy, Malice, Rage<\/li>\n<li>KDR: Perun, Polaris<\/li>\n<li>AEPi: Kamikaze, Camo<\/li>\n<li>SigNu: Skua, Bungarus Krait, King of Spades<\/li>\n<li>CIA: Firebird, Mirage, Conquest<\/li>\n<li>SigEp: Pandora, Barracuda<\/li>\n<li>Pioneers: Chaos<\/li>\n<li>PhiKap: Svengali, Schadenfreude<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Observations<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cmubuggy.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\">(check out the full gallery from Sunday here)<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\"><a style=\"float: right; padding: 3px;\" href=\"https:\/\/cmubuggy.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-FkpkBMm\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"giThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-FkpkBMm\/0\/883aae10\/Th\/DSC_0051-Th.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>SDC is pushing their envelope to the breaking point.\u00a0 They have pushers, and their buggies are damn fast, but they sent two into the bales today.\u00a0 On SDC&#8217;s second roll, Malice and Psychosis came cruising down at raceday speeds.\u00a0 Malice made it through the chute and rolled out what looked like at least 8 windows.\u00a0 Psychosis&#8217; line was wide and the driver couldn&#8217;t reign it in.\u00a0 She hit the outside bales past the apex with the full side of the buggy and a lot of force.\u00a0 The left wheel got jammed between bales and as the buggy continued on, the left axle was sheared off at the shell.\u00a0 Psychosis came to a rest in the middle of the road, the following buggies stopped safely, and the driver was fine.\u00a0 As if that wasn&#8217;t enough excitement for the day, Rage also went into the bales at full speed on the last roll of the day.<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\">CIA&#8217;s poor hill 3 pushers had to deal with Firebird&#8217;s pushbar not coming up at least twice. One guy got Firebird all the way to the 3\/4 transition by leaning down and pushing the tail of the buggy.<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\"><a style=\"float: right; padding: 3px;\" href=\"https:\/\/cmubuggy.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-j5zRJjp\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"giThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-j5zRJjp\/0\/a3d02e52\/Th\/pikafoad-18-Th.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>PiKA didn&#8217;t roll their new buggy on Sunday.\u00a0 Given its similarity to Chimera, I had assumed they were hoping to race it on a top team, but you&#8217;d think they would want to get it out for more than 2 days of rolls before truck weekend.\u00a0 Chimera lost its rear hatch on hill 2 after what looked to be a rear axle failure.\u00a0 After crossing the huge bump at the top of hill 2, the rear hatch was dislodged and couldn&#8217;t be put back in place.\u00a0 The rear wheel was no longer visible under the buggy.\u00a0 They carried it back to the tent.<\/li>\n<li style=\"clear: right;\"><a style=\"float: right; padding: 3px;\" href=\"https:\/\/cmubuggy.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-697jCw2\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"giThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-697jCw2\/0\/24c34d7e\/Th\/DSC_0038-Th.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a style=\"float: right; padding: 3px;\" href=\"https:\/\/cmubuggy.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-JrR3mfp\/A3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"giThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2008-2009\/Spring-Rolls-Apr-5\/i-JrR3mfp\/0\/b9a97fdd\/Th\/DSC_0109-Th.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Beta is getting all the help sweepstakes can offer to qualify for the races.\u00a0 Problem Child rolled on what seemed like every other roll of the day, sharing turns with Spirit and I think others.\u00a0 SigNu and SigEp also got in the act, rolling together more than once. It&#8217;s definitely a noble goal to get as many teams participating and qualified as possible, but I wonder if eventually the teams getting to role only on their turns might wonder how it&#8217;s fair.
