I loved the JumboTron in concept. It was great to be able to see everything that was going on throughout the race and not be limited to WRCT audio. It was also nice that the alumni community was so forthcoming with auction bid monies that they could be fully funded.
Biggest issue was that all outside-of-the-chute-turn spectators would run out into the streets immediately after the follow car during every heat. I don't particularly care. I'll do that if I have to. But it seems sub-optimal. It created this repeated frenzy of radio-club yelling and CMU Police intervention virtually every heat.
Secondly, the JumboTron generator put off quite an exhaust stink -- smelled like partially combusted diesel to me. It was kind of disgusting. I suppose the alternative was cigarette smoke and BO, but still.
For next year, I propose putting it 30-60 yards up the hill on Flagstaff. Then no one would have to run into the road to see it, and very few people stand far enough up the hill to be bothered by the exhaust. There are already phone poles with cables running across the road nearby, and we already string things across the road in other places on the course. Furthermore, being able to run cables not-over-the-road somehow didn't save us from the exhaust fumes. The effort to run a cable over the road seems small in comparison to the benefit.
