Eventually someone will post a better summary somewhere but here is a quick rundown. Weather was hot, humid, and threatened to rain a few times but never did. There was a variable tail wind that helped shuffle the standings a bit but the lanes were well balanced this year as many cars had there times from each lane very close together. Lane 1 was probably a bit quicker if you could take away the wind effects (or the wheels on the top cars were juicier in their first run).
A few wheel replacements were made due to tire degradation (our b car, Barr's car and possibly others). Juice and fragile wheels are becoming more common. Many wheel failures in practice as well earlier in the week. I think disposable wheels have become the norm in this race. The cloud of vapor that came from the wheel locker upon opening was astounding.
In the end, Duane's wheels were faster but mine hold the record. We ran different wheels on the 1st and 3rd place cars. Had the order been reversed we would likely be looking at a much faster time for the blue car and a much slower finish on the white car. We expected the white car to benefit from the wheel choic but ran the more well understood wheels on the A car. Ends up that was the right call for this year. I could project a very low 26.8 or possibly a very high 26.7 had the wheels been swapped.
round 1 2 3
our blue pontoon car (heat 5) 26,844, pass, 26.858
the ZE car ( heat 1) 26.859, 26.849, 26.873
our white test mule (heat 7) 26.861, 26.877, 26.963
After round one, our B car was 0.002 sec away from 2nd place. The record was broken 2 times. (heat 1 and heat 5 in round one).
We did not run the blue car in round 2 due to driver loading issues. We needed a harness to keep the driver from sliding back when braking (foot brake). We could nto get her loaded in in the short window we had so we pulled the car off the line rather than hold up the show. There was significant time pressure due to the movie that was filming at the same time. ZE's best time on their A car came from that round. We may have missed an opportunity to shine.
The top 7 cars (except the 5th place car of Michell Rich) were in the same lane in each heat.
best times for the rest:
4th Kristi Murphy (ZE's 'b' car) 26.916 (This time is also under last year's record)
5th Michell Rich (new team, my old wheels (I was not directly involved as they borrowed them from WARGO, I did provide them with a spare)) 26.965 (time set in round 2 with some warm wheels)
6th Cory Schurr (last 2 year's 2nd place (on pka wheels) 26.965 (they used new small wheels with rubber tires).
7th Hughes (american girl, former pka wheel runner, running ZE wheels) 26.977
8th Osborne/Barr (also on small wheels that were similar to Schurr's wheels, and wheel fairings) 27.000
9th Underwood (on ZE wheels) 27.007
10th Troyer (on some wheels we provided) 27.096
11th Albertoni (on pka wheels) 27.146
12th Tuna (on wheels we provided) 27.158
