I hope you either made it out this morning or followed along online, because prelims 2011 were a fine day of  racing.  Luckily, some fine folks in the forums summarized the day’s events, so I’ll skip that and get to the details.

The full official results are here on our leaderboard:

The schedule for finals is:

Women's finals

8:00 am:   PiKA A      SDC C
8:15 am:   Fringe A    SigEp A
8:30 am:   SDC A       SDC B

Men's Finals
8:45 am:   SPIRIT A    CIA A
9:00 am:   SDC C       PiKA C
9:15 am:   SDC B       SigEp B
9:30 am:   SDC A       Fringe B
9:45 am:   Fringe A    SPIRIT B

Obviously the biggest factor in all of the above is whether the large amount of rain that is forecast will materialize.  Exhibitions have been semi-cancelled to allow finals to happen if the rain comes late.  If the weather holds up, we will run robobuggy and exhibitions at 10 minute intervals.

  • I have not live in the ‘burgh for a while but anything is possible, I’ve seen storms like that literally split in half around the city.
Guinness toast night in the fall 1999 had 100% chance of showers for mini-raceday which never showed up … neither did I.

  • Dan Parietti says:

The same thing happened at Carnival 1967 (how time flies, but it feels like it happended just yesterday!). I pushed Hill 5 for PHi Kappa Theta, whch unfortunately recently lost its local charter, and we surprised the buggy community with a third place finish in the Friday prelims It rained on Saturday and they cancelled the finals. (For you racing sailors, that’s an “N” flag over an “A” flag meaning all races are abandoned, no more racing today, or until next Carnival). We just were so happy on that Saturday night at the Carnival dance. Great memories.

  • On the official results leader board SDC D and SAE A are bolded… Anyone know why?

Also, what does PiKA D’s “Stopped on Hill 5” mean? I guess the name is pretty self explanatory, but what are circumstances? Pusher refused to push? Driver got lost? I think this was Knightfall’s race with the lost tire in the chute, so shouldn’t it be a Loss of Mass DQ?

    • I was under the impression the buggy was unable to continue rolling without the tire on its wheel. Many people were impressed Knightfall made it all the way to hill 5 without the tire. I’m also not sure how you can DQ someone who didn’t finish in the first place…

    • I’m not seeing SDC D and SAE A in bold. If they are, it’s not intentional.

I like all of your hypotheses about PiKA D, but it was indeed the roll where Knightfall lost the tire from its wheel. Impressively, they pushed it all the way to late 4/ early 5 before stopping because of the grinding aluminum-on-pavement noise. I think DQ’s are reserved for teams that completed the race but did so in violation of the rules. Just as we don’t disqualify teams that spun, I think Knightfall earned a Did Not Finish.
