The weather this week made up for the total rain-out last weekend with two gorgeous sunny mornings in the 50s.  The Zoo made it out on the course, so we’re up to 8 teams.  This was another week of collaborative rolls-reporting, and the much of the same crew came through this time.  Many thanks go out to Ben Matzke, Zachary Waldman, Andrew Hundt, and Katherine Crawford for notes, pictures, and radar gun data.  That’s right, radar gun data.  Keep reading for the numbers on the early-season speed demons and a number of incidents and conflagrations.

 Saturday Observations (Saturday Gallery)

  • Saturday was a slow day as new drivers worked to figure out the course. There were a few minor incidents, but every driver seemed to come out fine, a few with smiles on their faces.
  • The chores are still working themselves out in a slow manner. This week, first rolls were delayed until 7:34 due to delays in getting the haybales in place and sweeping the excess hay away. Between rolls, the safety chair spent time sweeping the chute clean.
  • Amounts of rolls per day seem to be slowing back down as the new drivers get behind the wheel again. With the late start and multiple incidents, the roll order was only completed slightly more than two full rotations.
  • CIA’s Freyja came to a controlled stop on its first roll due to a vision issue, and continued under its own will. She later had an unrelated stop with contact at an early curb.
  • Fringe had Blizzard back out on the course this week, sporting some battle damage from its contact with the outer chute curb last time out. She had another run of bad luck this week, getting a helping hand downhill on the first roll of the day. On the second roll, she took a late and sudden left turn at the first transition flagger, actually making it into the ramp in the sidewalk in front of Phipps before the quick thinking flagger managed to stop it.
  • SigEp was rolling loud today, with Mamba and Pandora both making very loud rubbing noises at the top of the hill before and after their rolls.
  • SigNu made its first appearances at rolls this week. After losing a turn due to a misprinted rolls sheet, they rolled their first time on the last rotation through the order of the day. Skua tried to take the route through Panther Hollow bridge and wasn’t credited a roll, but it is good to see them getting back into the swing of it.
  • Spirit was out, with Mapambazuko taking a 180 degree spin into the outer bales on the second roll.
  • Speaking of teams making an appearance, a delegation from The Rez made an appearance to make friends at rolls. It looks like the plan is to get a dormitory team going, and they were looking for advice in helping propose their budgets and witness the spectacle of weekly freerolls. Hopefully we will have a new team on the course soon enough!
  • SDC and KapSig rounded out the list of teams present, both managing to make it through as the unscathed minority of the day.

Sunday Observations (Sunday Gallery)

  • Overall Sunday was a great day of rolls. Things started on time with at least 5 rolls for most teams. After a couple bumps at the start things got moving quickly and most of the day went without a hitch.
  • It was a bit darker out and certainly felt chillier, with the official reading in the low 50s by the time rolls started. There are several teams staging out in the open, and a few more using tents that have open tops or large openings between the walls. It isn’t clear if these teams are planning on toughing out the sub-freezing temperatures, finding warmer shelter, or simply getting their rolls in before the cold weather comes at all.
  • KapSig was up and on the hills bright and early, but packed up and headed home before the end of drops.
  • SigNu’s Skua turned left at Westinghouse down the wrong road, bump up over a curb and narrowly miss some rocks before stopping in a patch of dirt. Fortunately, the driver was able to stop and turned out just fine. They packed up for the day after this. It is worth mentioning that they only had a single no parking bag attached, and it seemed awful flat as it came off hill 2.
  • Fringe had a buggy kiss the bales in the chute but it wasn’t enough to completely slow the buggy down. It paused just past the bales and after asking if the driver was ok they continued to push the buggy up the hill.
  • Spirit has been exhibiting their improved driving skills, with their drivers recovering beautifully from power slides through the chute.
  • SigEp’s Pandora kept making its presence known at the top of the hill, with the loud rubbing from yesterday even louder before rolling. Mamba on the other hand seemed to settle down from yesterday, volume-wise.
  • There is a legend of a single, daring squirrel named Simon that gets a thrill out of dashing in front of buggies. Rumor has it that whenever you see a squirrel dashing past a buggy, if you listen carefully, you will hear Simon’s distinctive, gleeful laugh. Today, he could be seen dashing past SigEp’s Mamba on the way up hill 4, passing within a couple feet of the windshield.

Fun with a Radar Gun (Sunday)

Top Speed Org – Buggy Notes
33 mph Fringe – Bonsai
  • SDC was roaring, but their stealth technology seemed to evade the radar. Bane and Malice wouldn’t pick up on the gun until they were closer than most, so it’s possible our highest measured speeds are low.
  • The reading for Fringe’s best rollout with Bonsai was missed entirely.
32 Fringe – Bedlam
SigEp –  Barracuda
31 Fringe – Borealis
SDC – Bane
SigEp – Mamba
Spirit – Seraph
Spirit – Zuke
30 SDC – Malice
SDC – Rage
29 CIA – Ascension
28 AEPi – Kamikaze
CIA – Freyja
25 Spirit – Haraka
21 CIA – Renaissance
20 Fringe – Banyan
SigEp – Pandora

6 thoughts on “Rolls Report: October 8 & 9”

  • I ran a radar gun at races quite a few times and a few times on truck weekend as well. I found that on raceday, the top teams are stubbornly at 36 mph for every A buggy, so you really learn zip. Women’s races are 33mph for the top teams. I found this true for years in a row so I stopped brigning the gun.

Buggies with no wheel sticking out in the front don’t pick up as well, and buggies with no wheel sticking out at all – zoo -give the highest “stealth” factor.

the difference in time seems to be more at the top and rollout, with top speed varying less than one might think.

    • Well black is the fastest color. And good to know that the current design is hard for the radar guns to lock onto.

  • I misspoke in the rolls report… when I said radar gun I really meant speed gun. Its just a softball speed gun, nothing really expensive or fancy. As it said in the rolls report, its just for fun :-)

  • Just a comment on KapSig’s absence on Sunday.

On their last roll of the day on Saturday, their driver kind of drifted into the curb right infront of the SigNu tent. From the looks of it, she came out fine, but caused substantial damage to the axle.
