Push practice delayed indefinitely pending city review

Push practice was scheduled to start this week, but just as teams were charging up their flashlight batteries and telling their new drivers that it’s “actually kind of fun,” Sweepstakes had to put a hold on things.

Apparently, the city has decided to take a closer look at the late night road-closing permits this year and they’re not sure they like what they see.  The issue is that the road closure is informal during push practice and cars are allowed to come and go as needed – relying on students to keep everything safe and orderly.  This has obviously been the system for years and years without any problems, but tradition is apparently not always persuasive if you are in the business of road closure permit issuing.  This long-standing compromise of semi-closed roads isn’t ideal for teams or for the poor grad students leaving campus after midnight, but it’s a very functional compromise.  We can’t do without push practice, and I doubt everyone else would be happy with fully closed roads 5 nights a week.  Sweepstakes is working hard with the school, CMU & Pittsburgh police, and the city to get everyone comfortable with a plan.  I really hope that all parties can find a non-bureaucratic solution that doesn’t require additional expenses for sweepstakes and logistical headaches for teams.

Sweepstakes chair Chris Shellhamer notified teams today that push practice would hopefully begin after spring break (11 days from now), but that that would be the soonest it is likely to be sorted out.  We’ll keep you updated here.

Rolls Report: Feb 27

Melting snow and rain kept teams off the course on Saturday, but Sunday was exciting enough to make up for it.  Pika joined the new buggy 2011 club (with a standard tryke no less!) and Spirit entertained the chute crowd with a hat trick of spins and a rarely seen mechanical failure.  Enough intro, let’s get to the details.

Welcome Back to Buggy! Rolls Report 2/19

If you’re not in town it might have been easy to miss, but here on campus, it’s buggy season again!  Last weekend was cancelled well in advance due to generally crappy weather and an insufficient number of caped teams, but the past week was nothing but ridiculously nice caping weather, and almost everyone got their act together.  9 orgs made it out (everyone except for SAE) to kick off the semester together with two new buggies and a robot.  Sunday was called off for unsuitable weather.  The wind was freakin intense on Saturday and apparently it was going to be worse on Sunday.  “Wind?!” you old-timers say?  Well, wind=cold.

Rolls Report: Mini-Raceday and the end of the semester

Sorry, I’m a slacker, this is way late.  Here’s the silver lining though.  This is your last rolls report until the spring so now the drought you have to endure is two days shorter!  Plus, scroll down and check it out, this report is meaty.  Good weather, a fair number of teams (include one new one!), enthusiasm, and some speed made for a top notch finale to the semester.  SDC successfully defended their mini-raceday men’s title, but Fringe took the women’s case of beer.  More details on that below.

Non-Rolls Report: Nov 6 & 7 (and homecoming)

Rolls weren’t to be this weekend, but the BAA had a good homecoming weekend anyhow.

The weather report for Saturday morning was pretty bad – temps just above freezing, and a rain / snow mix forecast above 50%. It was also the last day of rolls before daylight savings was to end, so there was only 1 hour scheduled. Given how many days of rolls they’ve had, it was an easy call and sweepstakes called it off by 9:30pm Friday night. As it turned out the precipitation never really materialized, but what are you gonna do about that.

Sunday was supposed to be much better with two full hours of warmer drier weather. Somehow, all of the other factors conspired to cancel rolls anyhow. First, there were multiple cars left in critical spots around the course, one of which was booted making it tough (impossible?) to tow away. Second, none of the hired cops showed up to close the roads. It’s still unclear why that happened, but it’s not the first time. As if that wasn’t enough, some large portion of the hay bales somehow went missing. I don’t know how you could make off with more than a couple of hay bales, but apparently someone did. With all of that together, things were called off before the pushers and alumni woke up, but not early enough to save the mechanics from carrying everything out and then back to the garages.

Not all was lost from the weekend though, because we had the best table in the UC of all of the alumni-oriented operations. We borrowed Bachi (’99) from Fringe for the day to add some variety and give my Blackjack a break and Tom Wood brought out T-2 and White Lightning to accompany his History of Buggy presentation. From the table, we met quite a few alumni from the 60’s through last year, many of whom didn’t know about us but walked away as dues-paying-members. We also introduced the strange concept of buggy to some prospective student tours and the line of people waiting to get into Rocky Horror Picture Show in McConomy. To finish things off in pan-organization alumni fashion, former PiKA driver Melissa Lee got almost all the way into Bachi for a photo-op.

Thanks to Tom, Shafeeq, Carsen, and Aiton for helping man the table, and for everyone that stopped by and became members!

Rolls Report: Oct 30

The cold finally showed up for Halloween weekend with rolls temperatures around 37, and with daylight savings time still in effect we’re down to about 60 minutes on the course.  Sunday was cancelled in advance to make way for parties, so we’re still batting an impressive 9 for 10 so far this semester against inclement weather.  Only 6 orgs made it out, so an hour was enough to get through the roll order 3 times.  If I’m not mistaken, this was the first day of the year with no incidents at all, that’t not very ghoulish.

Rolls Report: Oct 23 & 24

Teams must have read the comment thread from last week’s news post in which alumni were wondering why there are so many incidents these days, because this weekend was very smooth and uneventful.  It may have also just been regression to the mean.  Each weekend the weather is beautiful I think, “This might be the last one of the year …” and then it is beautiful again the next weekend.  No complaints.  It is staying dark for longer and longer but the drivers are brave and have started rolling before the streetlights are off as dawn is just starting to break.

Rolls Report: Oct 16

Orgs decided that there would be no rolls on Sunday because of mid-semester break, and even Saturday was a minimal crew of the most dedicated folks (or maybe the folks least skilled at planning something fun for mid-semester break).  SDC took the weekend off, and most teams had fewer buggies than normal except CIA whose 4 rolling buggies represented 25% of those on the course.  The fall weather is starting to kick in as it was about 40 degrees out there, but we’re still getting lucky on the precipitation.
