Final Day of Crowdfunding Drive and Stretch Goals

Hi all,

As the title implies, the Crowdfunding Drive is ending in 24 hours, and as of this writing, we’ve already met our goal! Accordingly, we’re adding a stretch goal of an extra $1k to fund displays for the starting line at the bottom of Tech St. These displays will show the scoreboard, leaderboard, and video broadcast so that more spectators, including the students racing, will be better able to follow the action! If we don’t meet our goal, or if we exceed our goal, we will use the money towards raceday giveaways: merchandise for current students, funding towards a giant gourmet buggy cake, and improving the marquee Buggy Bash event. We’re so happy that folks have chosen nearly every perk offered and that you’re excited to give to the organizations making Buggy happen every year.

From all of us elected to be your Buggy100 BAA Officers, thank you for your support. Every fundraising request we’ve put out this year has been met with considerably more enthusiasm than we expected and we’re very excited to be able to put on the biggest Raceday ever, as well as set ourselves up for the future with the Buggy Endowed Fund. As the History of Buggy closes out, we’re hoping to spool up those Spring Rolls Reports (maybe this weekend!), Raceday Preview content, plus podcasts, event teasers and more announcements for Raceday. Buggy100 Crowdfunding Campaign (one week left!)

Hi everyone, Mike here:

Our official CMU Crowdfunding campaign has reached just over halfway to the goal, with one week left to go! This is a great opportunity to check out some additional perks, if you missed Giving Tuesday earlier last month. In addition to the new Buggy100 rewards at each level, we’re also offering reserved (highest priority) choices in the lead truck auction for both prelims and finals, as well as an option to choose the buggy we put on our Buggy100 cupcakes!

The reason we are pushing for membership donations on Giving Tuesday and through this crowdfunding push this year is so that we can budget for Buggy100 before it happens, rather than relying only on donations from Raceday last year or forecasting donations at Buggy100 (which is particularly difficult with all the extra enthusiasm going around!). You’ve already shattered our expectations and every donation we get will be going towards new and amazing stuff to really put Buggy100 over the top. So if you were thinking about signing up just in time for the Raceday Preview, we promise that’s coming, and a whole lot more, and it would mean a lot to have your contribution counted towards Buggy100 and this crowdfunding campaign, so please consider giving this week.

Upcoming Events and New Initiatives #2

Winter Greetings to BAA Members,

In case you didn’t know, we have fewer than 100 days until the 100th year of Buggy! We’re very busy getting things ready. Here’s a quick rundown of the latest happenings and work-in-progress:

New podcast series: Will Weiner, in collaboration with several community members, is launching a podcast interview series on the compelling narratives leading up to Buggy 100. We’ll post on cmubuggy.org as soon as the first episode is available!

Crowdfunding push: In collaboration with CMU Marketing and Communication, we are launching a crowdfunding initiative that you can check out here. We’ll be offering stretch goals and special incentives on top of the usual membership perks, so check back!

Bookstore merchandise: We’re finalizing the designs for Buggy100 bookstore merchandise, to be made available soon. Available items include shot glasses and t-shirts among other things. We’re hoping the bookstore is able to post these items on the website as well as make them available for pre-order and pickup on Raceday itself.

New teams, endowment, membership levels: If you haven’t heard, we’re switching to a new model of membership for Buggy100 in order to encourage the well-planned funding of buggy moving forward. As a part of this, we have started a Buggy Endowed Fund, which will generate regular yields that we can use to support student (and alumni) initiatives to keep buggy going strong. History of Buggy: Bryan Arsham’s blockbuster series continues this week with the 1980s. Database update for website: We’re working on migrating our historical records to a SQL database for easier management and accessibility. If you’re interested in helping or requesting data, let us know!

Before we dig into this week, we want to quickly remind you that the 100th Year of Buggy is coming up as part of Spring Carnival on April 16-18, 2020. We want to make the Buggy Centennial the biggest celebration in Buggy history! But to do that, we’ll need your help. Together with the CMU Alumni Relations Office, we’ve launched a Crowdfunding initiative to help support Buggy100 and make our dreams a reality. So if you can, please help us make Buggy100 the spectacle it deserves to be, and consider giving towards this celebration. This week, the 100 Years of Buggy History series takes a look at the 1970s. The end of the decade saw some crazy races, and some even crazier buggies. It also includes one of the craziest incidents ever, involving a dog. But it wasn’t all craziness on the course; there was also a showdown between Sweepstakes and Student Senate. And of course, one of the biggest changes in Buggy history – the introduction of Women’s Racing.

And of course, the our first introduction to the mythical being known only as Compubookie. We’ve also got organizations running under new names (SDC, ZBT), C Teams, and all kinds of controversy.

100 Years of Buggy History – 1970-1973

This week, the 100 Years of Buggy History reaches a turning point with the early 1970s. A tragic event in 1971 nearly ended the sport, but the organizations got together to implement significant changes to the safety rules. We also had some new organizations, a bunch of new buggies, and even new roads! Plus, we have our first official predictions, and Carnival makes a move.

This week, the 100 Years of Buggy History series takes a look at the late 1960s. Carnegie Institute of Technology officially became Carnegie-Mellon University, while Sweepstakes also introduced the first official daytime practice rolls! Meanwhile, on the course PiKA and Beta would continue to duke it out, SAE would make their last stand on bikes, and the races would officially become a campus-wide affair with the introduction of the International Club (a.k.a. Fringe).
