Giving Day 2023!

Giving CMU day is here and there is no better day to support your favorite sport. This year the BAA has been supporting multiple new and refounding organizations, exploring options for enhanced safety in the sport and investing in a timing and data system that can be utilized by each organization during rolls and by broadcast during raceday.

CMU will be matching donations throughout the day which can allow us to invest even more in these initiatives and further uplift raceday events.

Here’s our official Giving Day donation link: https://givingcmuday.cmu.edu/campaigns/uni-buggy-alumni-association

Additionally your donations will count towards your membership for this year if they exceed $20. Learn more on our membership page.

Rolls Report: November 11 & 12 – Homecoming

This weekend was Homecoming at CMU. Alumni who were back on campus got to see the CMU football team take home the 37th annual Academic Bowl, taste the various chilis at the 20th Annual CMU Chili Cook-Off, and attend the official grand opening of the new Scaife Hall. But most importantly, they were able to fill up on donuts and coffee courtesy of the BAA at Rolls! It was a full weekend of Rolls, with 7 orgs out each day and a lot of time to roll, leading to over 120 individual rolls across the 9 total organizations. It wasn’t without hiccups though, as the near-freezing temperatures saw a couple of buggy parts littering the course and one – well, two – very close calls with a bicyclist.

The one buggy we could ALL probably fit (well, other than Limo)

BAA Beanies are Here!

As promised, BAA’s fall buggy beanies are here – but it’s for a limited time only! These fleece lined knit beanies are a great way to show your buggy spirit while staying warm this winter. Embroidered with the BAA logo, they’re available for purchase in two colors: maroon red and classic black.

Order yours now at https://cmubuggy.org/merch, but hurry! The fundraiser ends on December 2nd, and barring any major delays, the hats will be shipped in time for the holidays.

Rolls Report: November 4 & 5 – Mini-Raceday

This week, we set the clocks back and the buggies forward, as Saturday was Mini-Raceday! The shortest day of Rolls of the year saw a lot of excitement, as 8 orgs were out doing full Hill 1s and getting some times. Sunday saw a smaller crowd, as several orgs decided to get the extra hour of sleep instead of more Fall rolls, leading to a Rolls session that actually ended early.

Red sky in the morning, Buggy drivers take warning… that it’s Mini-Raceday!

Rolls Report: October 28 – Happy Halloween

It was Halloween weekend at the corner of Tech & Frew, which meant a very important thing: Buggy Costumes! Of course, it also meant that there were Halloween parties Saturday night, and as is pretty common, party nights mean tired* students that don’t want to wake up for Rolls at 4am the next day. Because of that, there was no quorum for Sunday rolls, leaving us with just 1 day of Rolls this weekend.

BAA News, Now direct to your Inbox!

Based on the results of our user survey earlier this year, we found that one of the most popular ways people would like to hear about BAA news is directly into their inbox. We’re pleased to announce that this is once again possible — in a way that you can control yourself via Google Groups.

News posts should now be automatically forwarding to both the new mailing list as well as our Discord.

If this sounds like something you might want, head over to https://groups.google.com/g/baa-news to sign up.

Web Site Redesign Interviews

One of the things the BAA has been thinking about for a while is how we can make the web site more useful to all of its various users. While we’ve done a lot of improvements over the last few years, we’ve also been thinking about what a larger overhaul might look like.

To do this, we’re planning a partnership with current students in the IS class 67-240, Mobile Web Design & Development. We’ll be working with several teams of students to come up with ideas for what a redesign might look like. To that end, the students will need to work with current or potential users of the site to understand their needs better, through interviews.

So, we’d like to gather a variety of people — current alums, current students, and others with an interest in Buggy to help give them feedback. If this sounds like something that might be interesting to you, please sign up at the form below. We might not contact everyone, but having a variety of volunteers is important to us.

Rolls? Report: October 8 – Digging Up The Truth

It’s a short rolls report this week, and it’s not because we didn’t have people out there (though you should still help us out by signing up to take notes/photos). Saturday’s rolls were cancelled early in the week due to a lack of quorum. But Sunday was still on, and with decent weather things were looking up…Until Sweepstakes got to the course. It didn’t take long before they discovered an Excavator parked on the shoulder of Schenley Drive just past Westinghouse Pond. Even worse, it was parked on the Flagstaff side of the road, leaving the construction equipment directly in the line of the drivers. Particularly with some new drivers out at rolls, the placement of the equipment was considered to be far too great a risk to buggies and drivers. Therefore, Sweepstakes was left with no choice but to cancel rolls.

The BAA History Committee will neither confirm nor deny that it is following up on a tip it received on the whereabouts of DU’s King Eider.

A few upcoming reminders to close this report out:

  • There are no Rolls for the next 2 weekends, as we’re coming up on CMU’s Fall Break. But stick around, as we should be back before Halloween (we’ll see if any teams dress up their buggies this year).
  • Next weekend may not have Rolls, but it’s Family Weekend at CMU (why they scheduled Family Weekend during the Fall Break is a good question, but neither the BAA nor Sweepstakes had anything to do with it). If you’re on campus, make sure to check out Tom Wood’s History of Buggy Presentation – Family Edition, at Noon on Saturday, October 14 in Connan Room – CUC.
  • Mini-Raceday is currently scheduled for the weekend of November 4-5, and we’ll need LOTS of help, especially when it comes to timing. If you’re in Pittsburgh or considering going back for that weekend, please let us know.
  • CMU Homecoming is the weekend of November 11-12, and there should be Rolls. If you’ll be back that weekend, make sure to come out and join us!
  • Last but not least, if you’ve submitted a BAA Endowed Fund Grant Proposal, reminder that your feedback responses are due this week!
